Complaints and concerns about police relations drove a task force to convene and develop some recommendations for the City of Phoenix. Made up of civic leaders and community members, the task force would like to see cops have more positive interaction with the neighborhoods, particularly in South Phoenix. Reactive policing is known in the field as a mediocre way of handling crime. It does nothing to prevent potential acts of crime and certainly doesn’t build rapport between officers and the people. The Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is nationally known for his immigration sweeps. While the new controversial law taking effect next month won’t really change his actions, people are wondering if the resources used thus far in the sweeps have been wisely spent.

Over the past two years, the sheriff has received much criticism for his approach to law enforcement. He considers it his job to stop illegal immigrants in his communities and has directed law enforcement to stop people for nearly any violation if suspected of being in Arizona illegally. Tucson police are investigating an act of vandalism committed on the office of a U.S. Congresswoman in that city today. While they aren’t certain if the act is connected to the sweeping healthcare legislation recently passed, and supported by the Democrat Congresswoman, they are looking into the possibility.
