Man Faces Arizona Gun Charges After Incident at Ex Girlfriend’s Home

An Arizona man is facing multiple charges after an incident involving a weapon and a scuffle at his ex-girlfriend’s home.

The woman awoke to find forty two year old David Brandt in her bedroom after everyone in the house had gone to sleep. She saw a gun in his pocket, which she grabbed, and ran to alert other adults in the home.

Brandt fought with an adult male in the home and the woman was able to take the gun from him a second time. During the fight, Brandt bit the adult male.

The police were called around 11 pm and found the suspect hiding behind an electrical box, according to this story from the Daily Courier. Before taking him into custody, Brandt resisted arrest. He is now facing charges of recklessly handling a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, and assaulting law enforcement.

Brandt, from Chino Valle, is being held in the Camp Verde jail on $1 million bond.

If you’ve never been involved in the legal system, it is sometimes hard to grasp how such a quick situation can result in such a slew of charges. The legal system is complicated and often one act can lead to multiple, serious criminal charges.

Gun laws are some of the most extensive on the books. While our right to bear arms is protected by the Constitution, this right has to be regulated by state law. There are many restrictions on the types of guns you can own and how you can use them. A simple charge can be elevated dramatically if there was a firearm in your possession at the commission of the act.

If you are facing any kind of weapons offense it is easy to see just how fast things can get very serious. One of the most commonly used offenses is called “misconduct involving a weapon” and can be charged as a misdemeanor or up to a Class 3 felony.
