Arizona Attorney Accused of Smuggling Drugs Into Jail
The drug trade is alive in well in our nation’s lock up facilities. Drugs and even cigarettes in some systems are a huge industry involving money and the prison hierarchy. In Phoenix this past week a defense attorney was charged with introducing drugs into a jail where his client was awaiting trial.
Forty-two year old David Paul De Costa is accused of taking heroin and methamphetamines into his client, Jesse Alejandro, who is being held in a Maricopa County Superior Court jail facility. Alejandro is awaiting trial on murder charges and also for having another attorney smuggle drugs into the facility, according to this Arizona Central report.
Both De Costa and Alejandro’s girlfriend Emilee Keen face charges of transferring and selling controlled substances, participating in a criminal syndicate, and conspiracy to promote contraband in a detention facility. All of the charges as Class 2 felonies.
All of the facts aren’t clear but it is alleged De Costa was given favors of a sexual nature for his participation in the scheme.
When police went to the home of Keen they apparently found an unspecified amount of drugs and cash. She was, reportedly, on probation at the time of this arrest and may face violations for this as well. When someone violates the terms of their probation, the probation can be revoked and they will then be required to serve an active sentence rather than one supervised in the community.
Class 2 felonies carry a potential sentence of 4 to 10 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections. Considering both defendants are facing multiple charges, they are looking at a potentially lengthy prison term.
Facing charges, no matter who you are, is a frightening experience. Whether you are guilty or not, the thought of having to spend years behind bars is enough to make anyone nervous.
