St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Results in Major AZ DUI Arrests

You can bet that on nearly any holiday weekend DUI arrests increase. People are out partying and celebrating, having a good time. St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday often marked by green beers, Guinness, and Jameson whiskey. Young people in particular use this holiday to celebrate a lot more than the Saint it was named after.

Police know this and many departments across Arizona set up DUI checkpoints to last throughout the weekend and into Tuesday night. This early report from ABC15.com pointed out that arrests were already mounting as the weekend got underway. In an effort to reduce accidents and deaths caused by DUI’s on this holiday weekend, police were out in full force.

In the Valley, eight police departments united to make 276 arrests throughout the entire holiday weekend. According to the Arizona Republic 74 of those arrests were considered “extreme”, or incidents where the suspects blood alcohol level was more than .15%.

DUI penalties are harsh, but being caught with a BAC of more than .15% is much more serious. If convicted of this offense, you can serve anywhere from 30 days to 6 months in jail in addition to fines and a 1 year license suspension. An ignition interlock device will also be installed in your vehicle for this offense.

A 1st offense DUI carries a potential sentence of 10 days to 6 months in jail, fines, license suspension, and ignition interlock device as well. For people who have been convicted of DUI in the past, this penalty becomes much more serious as the convictions mount.

People get caught up in the excitement of holidays and often make poor choices. Perhaps you were one of the many who was arrested on this holiday weekend and are looking for an experienced Arizona DUI attorney to handle your case. Call me today for a consultation and to see how I can help.
